Charlie Wi's Deliberate Practice! Charlie Wi

Immediately after Charlie Wi crafted a masterpiece at Spyglass during the second round of the AT&T (66, 13 fairways and 17 greens) he headed to the range for post round practice. No phone, no texting, no interviews, and no autographs.

This is how he practiced.
His caddie, Mark, set 8 empty baskets out on the range at 10-yard intervals from 40 to 90 yards. Using his 56 degree sand wedge, Charlie randomly hit shots to the targets simulating on course play by using his full pre-shot routine for each repetition. Seldom did he repeat successive shots to the same target. I don't know the exact count, but Charlie went through at least two baskets of wedge shots.

He continued simulated practice with various other clubs, never repeating the same shot, or to the same target. After another basket he was off to the practice green to hit a variety of chip shots, always using his full pre-shot routine while mixing targets and shot variety.

He finished with what he calls "alignment putting." He selected a 4-foot putt with a one-cup break, put a tee in the green at the aiming spot, and lined up his putter to start the ball at the tee. On every putt, Mark checked Charlie's putter blade aim. He confirmed the aim just before Charlie stroked the ball. They completed about 10 repetitions on both sides of the hole.

No matter what the score, and with weather and daylight permitting, this is their post round practice. In fact, the next day, Charlie crafted a 76 at Pebble Beach (made the cut on the number with a birdie at 7 and pars on 8 and 9), and was off to the range for the same practice.

It's not unusual to observe Charlie practicing with what we call deliberate practice. That's practice that's structured, with full attention and intensity, target awareness, that simulates on course play, and includes an understanding of its long-term benefits.

What is the lesson learned? With modifications depending upon your skill set, you can plan and apply a similar post-round practice regimen for the steady improvement of your game.

Eric JonesEric Jones as Master of his World Lion

Learn how Eric Jones will be “master of his world’ and the 2010 Master’s Long Drive Champion. Target Centered Golf. To be certain that his fluid and powerful swing will be automatic, he has added another creative piece to his performance package. He’ll be in the present more quickly, and deep into his imagination where he stores millions of experiences including dazzling past performances and a world-class long drive swing. He’ll operate subconsciously, processing simultaneously, a positive emotional state, target awareness and a trusting swing. From a set of pictures developed by the Zurich Resource Model, Eric selected the Lion (link) and with it a state motto of “I’m master of my world.” The motto was combined with word associations like power, fluid, “on the edge,” confidence, and trust to stimulate his subconscious where automatic swings reside and are recalled. Each time he looks at the Lion and the subconscious reminders, he’ll repeatedly fire and build the neuro-pathways, which allow him to enter and stay in the high performance state that he needs for the competition. He’ll be “master of his world.”

What a weekend at The First Tee Tournament Pebble Beach

It was another special treat for The First Tee Members, Ashley Noda and John Louie, at the First Tee Champions Tour Open at Pebble Beach. In addition to the special festivities around the tournament, Ashley (Mike Hulbert, 7th) and John (Bobby Clampett, 6th) played into the weekend even getting a little TV coverage. They helped their better ball scores with birdies, an Ashley eagle, and par savors. To receive the coveted tournament invitation, John and Ashley completed a rigorous selection process within The First Tee that includes volunteer work in their sections. And of course their games are at least up to par.

Charlie Wi Charlie Wi jumps up the Fed Ex List:

After making 12 birdies in 36 holes at the US Open qualifier at Del Paso, CC in Sacramento, and just missing the play at Pebble Beach, Charlie has vaulted to the top echelon of tour players with strong play at The Travelers Championship and 4th at the AT&T National.

Being in contention with 9 holes to play is one of Charlie’s goals, and that has held true the last two weeks. “In contention comes first and wins will follow,” says the 9 time worldwide winner.

By fully embracing the teachings of Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett, Charlie has developed a repeatable swing that he can trust under pressure. Through Winning The Battle Within, he has learned to execute his swing with a fail-safe pre-shot routine (link) – seeing the shots and feeling the swings that match what he sees. That’s a powerful combination that will bring him to the winner’s circle once again.

You can do the same. Commit to a swing coach who fits your style and needs. Take the lessons, and most importantly, like Charlie has done, do the practice necessary to learn the skill. Then develop a pre-shot routine that will lead you to consistent execution.

Sean, Herbert and Glen; Spain Glen and Angel

A Report from Spain:

Through the efforts of Angel Sanz and his company, Crow Legacy, Winning The Battle Within is center front in the Spanish golf culture.

Breakfast was light; lunches long and packed with conversation, and dinners with tapas and drinks, more conversation, and never before 9PM.

The Plaza de Toro, Madrid, the most prestigious in all of Spain, held a Corrida every night during the festival San Ysidro. The music, paso nobles, is full of passion, and El Paseo del Matador is all we described it to be – paseo, passion, corazon, postura and cojones. (Read El Paseo del Matador)

El Corrida de Toro was full of Spanish culture pageantry, and from our seats, we could smell the bull and see the confidence and frights in the eyes of the Matadors.

The five players sponsored by Angel Sanz and Crow Legacy are committed, motivated and talented. He's put together an interesting, cutting edge organization in support of the players - mentors, sport psych, swing coaches, trainer, etc. Winning The Battle Within is his cornerstone. Nacho Gervas - Georgia Tech 88 - is the mentor coach. Sean Corte-Real (Pacific 1997) and Herbert Forster (Pacific, 1998) do the Sport Psychology work. They both are committed Winning the Battle Within coaches and have added significant texture to the process.
More new ways to do old and important things.

New players to follow: Diego Suazo, Antonio Rosado,     -Alps Tour, Javier Colomo and Juan Perron – Challenge Tour, and Carmen Alonzo, European Women’s Tour.

Through his TV show, Angel sponsors the Spanish version of the Big Break and we spent the day introducing Winning The Battle Within to the finalist.

Playing the First Stage of PGATour qualifying at San Juan Oaks, Ryan Thornberry shot rounds of 73, 71, 69 & 70 to advance to the second round of play.  It was Ryan’s third try in the stress filled Fall Classic and attributes his improved and more consistent play to an adherence to Winning The Battle Within disciplined practice and emotional management regimens combined with regular technique work with swing coach, Mike Bender.

The Walmart First Tee Champions Golf Tournament at Pebble Beach

At Pebble Beach over the first weekend in September, 78 junior players from across the country participated in the Walmart First Tee Tournament paired with Champions Tour players for three rounds. As you can imagine it was an extraordinary experience for the young players.

Through a rigorous selection process that included a working knowledge of the core values of First Tee, four players with whom I work were chosen. Although none made the cut into the third round of play – the low 20 teams advanced to the final round – they had the time of their lives. My consultations consisted of; make sure you experience everything and have a great time.

All junior players played at scratch, and as you might guess, the luck of the random draw to some degree determined scores.

But the scores did not matter; just being there with other juniors and the pros compensated for any wayward shot. How would you like to be feted for a week like a Tour player: use the same range, play practice rounds and hang out with the likes of Fred Funk, Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Jeff Sluman and Bob Gilder to name just a few. There were hospitality rooms, concerts, video game rooms and the gorgeous Monterey Peninsula fall weather – it’s summer time at Pebble Beach.

So Ashley Noda (Roseville), John Louie (Salinas), Nathan Winn (Hollister) and Travis Rowney (Pleasanton) made it through the First Tee selection process, by embracing the First Tee core values and developing a game. First tee made an extraordinary contribution to these young people who had a golf experience never to forget.

Kris Baxter

Kris Baxter challenges the Champions Tour.

With an enterprising and passionate commitment to the improvement of his game, Kris has vaulted to the edge of the Champions Tour. There still is a distance to go to gain tour status – make it through the grueling qualifying tournament – but it’s now within sight.

By qualifying for the US Senior Open – 80 for three spots – and playing well at the Open over the first two rounds, 77, and 73, Kris has established Champions Tour respectability. He missed the cut by three.

The Champions tour is loaded with ex PGATour and major winners. It strongly promotes the stars and discourages players like Kris, who have no star credentials, to even try.

Each year an unknown slips through the process and gains life on the Tour. Kris expects to become one of the exceptions to the rule.

Kris credits a great deal of his exponential improvement to his total commitment to the principles of Winning The Battle Within.

This is what I (Kris) learned

  • I never saw or heard the crowd - the best focus and staying present in my life.
  • SAT was high all week - only 3 and 4 shots that I did not trust for two days.
  • I was prepared for surprises - many occurred and I dealt with them deftly
  • I knew there would be much to experience, possibly a surprise or two but I wholeheartedly embraced all that came my way. I had clear goals and objectives. My emotions and memories will be cherished forever. This is exactly what I have wanted and trained for – I am more determined than ever.

NFL Legend Bill Walsh calls it "One of the best books ever written on the mental approach to golf and sports."
